In 1847, while grazing his cattle on the Rancho Santa Ana, John Sutter discovered coffee beans in an area that is now known as downtown Anaheim. The first coffee shop in Anaheim was opened by Sutter and his partner David Hagerman in 1850. By 1861, Sutter had built a successful business importing and marketing Ethiopian coffee from Africa. In 1872, he founded the Orange Coffee Company to produce and sell high-quality Italian espresso beans. The name "Orange" comes from two sources: one originates from Native Americans who called it "Ocala," which means "place where water covers land." The other comes from Spanish settlers working on Mission San Antonio de Padua's rancho Verdugo near present-day Anaheim when they discovered orange trees and named it Villa de Orange. A post office was established at this location on November 15, 1847, and the town took its current name on February 11, 1851. When Spanish missionaries arrived they found wild orange trees growing abundantly but did not cultivate them because their soil was too sandy for farming purposes so they named this area Villa de la Oranges which means estate of oranges. The first Europeans to visit what is now Orange County were Spanish missionaries in 1769–1770. They named a valley after José de Oviedo, Marqués de la Sierra's lieutenant general in New Spain. The town of Santa Ana was founded by Captain James Cook on January 8, 1795 as his landing site for exploring and mapping new parts of California Peninsula. Cook named it King Street Cove because he thought it would be more likely than other sites that people would stop there when they traveled from inland valleys to see the sea at Catalina Island and Point Conception (near modern-day San Pedro). Cook's party arrived on January 11th but no settlement was made because there were no boats or ships available to ferry goods overland from Santa Barbara Bay. On February 14th Governor Manuel Micheltorena issued an Executive Order creating Rancho Buena Ventura which included about 6 square miles (15 km²) of present-day Orange County including much of what is now downtown Irvine as well as most of what is today Anaheim Hills and Garden Grove
