The National Guard has been in Orange County for over 50 years. The unit was first organized on December 14, 1941 as the Orange County Sheriff's Department Reserve Unit. On October 1, 1942, the National Guard Bureau activated the unit and assigned it to the Sheriff's Department. On November 9, 1945, the battalion became part of the Regular Army and was redesignated Battalion (National Guard) 318. It wasactivated at Camp Pendleton on January 24, 1946 and attached to Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the First Infantry Division/Orange County District. In 1948-1949 it served in Europe with I Brigade/ Third Infantry Division/Third Artillery Regiment participating in NATO exercises in Germany and Austria. From 1951 to 1954 it served along with I Brigade/ Fourth Infantry Division/Fourth Artillery Regiment in Korea as a component of UEE Task Force 373 under command of General MacArthur while also serving with Task Force 95A which fought against North Korean forces during May-October 1950. On July 1st 1959, Battalion (National Guard) 318 became a troop battalion within VII Corps Support Command when that command was established pursuant to Command Order No 319-1 dated 5th September 1959 from Headquarters Fifth Army G-3 Deptemberment Commander commanding United States Forces Europe Region A Mediterranean Theater Of Operations headquarters European Command element stationed at Naples Italy duty rotation army strength until ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT HQ MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 1960 relieved by II Corps support command elements arrived 12th OCTOBER 1960 transferred from Naples Battalion (National Guard) 318 continued its rotation duty assignment through VI Corps Support Command duties until duty relieved by III Corps support command elements arrival 3rd APRIL 1961 transferred from Naples This battalion remained inactive for almost two years before being reactivated on 2nd JULY 1962 at Camp Blanding Island Florida under control of III Corps Support Command elements arriving 7th JULY 1962 transferred from Naples
