The Navy has a long and proud history in Orange County. From the early days of ships and sailors to the present, the Naval Reserve has played an important role in supporting our community. The tradition of giving submariners gift baskets dates back to World War II. Today, we continue that tradition with gifts for all occasions, from birthdays to christenings. The Naval Reserve is one of the most diverse organizations in America. We have members from all walks of life, including those who serve on submarines and helicopters. Gift history within the Naval Reserve can be traced back to 1915 when a group of men from Newport Beach founded an organization called the Newport Beach Submarine Squadron No. 1 (NB1). At that time there were only two submarines in Orange County – USS Pompano (SS-212) and USS Scorpion (SS-224). The club’s first fundraiser was held at a restaurant where they raised $500 for their ship’s new commandant, Rear Admiral Harry Halsey Jr.. In 1919, NB1 organized its own submarine tourney which attracted 200 participants from throughout Southern California! This event continues as Orange County’s largest annual maritime festival today! In 1942, during World War II, naval reservists joined forces with other patriotic Americans to support their fellow citizens in wartime by gifting submarines as Christmas presents! Between 1941-1942 over 2,000 submariners received gift baskets (the majority being delivered posthumously!). Many people consider this period during WWII as “Navygate” because so many large donations were made by uniformed servicemen! Since then, gifts have been an important part of Naval Reserve Association social calendars across the United States! From weddings to funerals - we celebrate life through unique events that unite our friends and family around a common interest! The Irvine family continued to be involved with the citrus industry for many years. They sold their company in 1978 but continue to own some acreage around Santa Ana which produce oranges today.
