In 1846, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Calfee surveyed Rancho Santiago de la Paloma,[2] south of what is now Anaheim Hills, including much of what would become Orange County.[3] He named this property La Habra Creek Valley Reserve due to its extensive citrus fruit production—the first commercial orchard in southern California. In 1848, following Mexican Independence from Spain,[4] US citizens James Irvine and Elias Howe purchased Rancho Santiago de la Paloma from Lt Col Calfee for $1 million[5][6][7].. They founded Irvine Station on their estate as a cattle ranch with 400 head of Hereford/Boskin horses grazing under trees that stretched across 14 acres (5 ha).[8][9][10] One acre (0.40 hectare) was allocated to each family members who lived there while they operated the rancho; title reverted tolos enemigos once they sold or abandoned it.[11][12][13]:246 As development increased around them – irrigated agriculture became more popular in Southern California – cattleranching dwindled until it disappeared completely by 1870 when irrigation systems were installed nearby at Anaheim Canyon and Fullerton Basin.[14]:241 In 1892 Captain William Henschel acquired Rancho Santa Margarita del Sur from José Gomez for $4 million dollars ($102 million today)[15], which included most of what would become Orange County west of Anaheim hills[16]. Captain Henschel started developing Harveys Beach along Doheny Beach Boulevard south of Seal Beach into an open-air market known as Rodeo Park; this led to his nickname “Father Of Open Air Markets” because he created markets throughout Southern California while preserving natural resources such as ocean watermelons etc., unlike earlier marketeers such as Samuel Morse who damaged coastal forests selling produce door-to-door). After Henschel’s death various heirs struggled over control over beach holdings until 1913 when Don Carlos Fuentes took over operation & management becoming Father Don Carlos International Airport Authority Incorporated v Donald Lyle Harris et al.. This rancho was located about 10 miles east of present-day Anaheim Hills on an ancient Indian trading trail called the Sonora Trail. Another important part of early Orange County history is its connection with San Diego as well as Coachella Valley areas northeast of here Town Square had a large market place known as “The Square” from where taxes were collected by officials within town square which was also used for entertainment purposes such as circuses and fairs throughout much of pre-war America
