Small batch coffee began in Orange, California in the early 1970s as a way to bring quality coffee to local consumers. The first small-batch coffee shop opened on Depot Street in 1972, and the first small-batch roastery was open in 1978. Today, there are over seventy small-batch coffee shops and roasters throughout Orange County. The origins of small-batch coffee can be traced back to 1967 when Donny Hathaway started brewing his own beans at his family's farmhouse kitchen stove. Hathaway's love for handcrafted espresso led him to start making single origin roasted beans on a smaller scale, which he called "donuts." In 1971, Hathaway partnered with friends Dennis Watkins and Rick Peterson to open Aptos Coffee Company, which became one of the first small-batch coffee companies in the country. Aptos Coffee continued production until it closed its doors in 1995. In 1978, Donny Hathaway's brother Dave started brewing his own small batch of espresso at their home. burgeoning Orange County had seen an increase in population growth and demand for quality Italian roast products from locals. As a result of this growth, Donny decided to open his own roastery that year with Joe Bastianich and Jeff Atchison from Los Angeles' Rook & Herreshoff Brewing Company. This partnership would lead to numerous other success stories for both businesses including three consecutive years of growth (1992-1994). The first people to live in what is now Orange were Native Americans who hunted their way through the area. In 1847, Captain John Cushing and his men discovered gold near what is now Anaheim Hills. This led to the successful exploration of this new land by American settlers and led to the founding of Anaheim County on November 3, 1849. The first post office was established in Anaheim on July 1, 1850. By 1865, orange had become an important citrus town with over 50 businesses located along Center Street. In 1870, two brothers named William Irvine built what is now Orange Avenue on land they acquired from Captain Cushing for $1 million dollars. From this location Irvine began growing oranges which became one of America’s leading crops after being introduced by Spanish missionaries in 1795. In 1906, during World War I, orange production skyrocketed due to newly developed airplanes transporting fruit from Florida to marketplaces all over the world. As a result of this boom time period many mills were built throughout Orange County including those at Placentia (1906), Westminster (1910), and Fullerton (1920). The economy basically depended upon agriculture until World War II when industrialization started taking hold across all parts of California beginning with aircraft manufacturing at Fullerton Airport which helped drive up local wages while also creating new jobs outside of agriculture such as engineering and research work at UCLA; these positions would lead eventually into white-collar work during postwar decades characterized by large families moving out West seeking opportunities while still maintaining some form of farming or ranching background During World War II there was also Airmen’s Home Depot just south of downtown Anaheim where military personnel could buy groceries GIs received rations at government warehouses

In 1821, the United States acquired California from Mexico and placed it under the jurisdiction of New Spain. The county seat was moved to Anaheim in 1856, after getting its start as a small settlement near Anaheim Hills. The population grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s due to new industrial development in Southern California, plus waves of European immigrants who came through Central America and South America. From 1915 until 1929, Orange County served as one of two counties in Los Angeles County.
