The first Europeans to visit Orinda were the Spanish in 1769. They named it San Francisco de los Andes because of its high altitude and cool climate. In 1846, American soldiers burned down the presidio here which destroyed some buildings and added to the town's name meaning "place with ruins." In 1868, Orinda incorporated as a village under the name Sanitaria del NorCal (later known as City of Orinda). The first post office was established in 1871. In 1902, when parts of Contra Costa County were annexed into Berkeley County, Orinda became part of Berkeley Township (now Martinez). On July 1, 1944, during World War II (), an airfield called Glenn Hitt Field was located east of town on what is now rural Cook Road. It served as a bombing range for Los Angeles and other western cities during that conflict. By 1968 most residents had left for more developed areas such as Walnut Creek or Pleasanton; however few people remain today who lived there prior to 1978 when Orinda joined BART service along with Walnut Creek and Hercules Rancho Seco .
