These newcomers helped create an atmosphere of neighborliness and cooperation that continues to this day. In addition,. many structures such as churches, schools, taverns/bars/cafés etc., survived into recent times (Figs 5-6). Many residents are estimated to have participated actively or passivelyin both major waves OF Californians migrating Westduringethe1930sand1950swest(Figs 7-8). 1) America’s First Mormon Settlement: In 1868 Mormon Pioneers arrived at Orinda California after being forced out of Nauvoo Illinois by mobs following their religious practice known as “Hori go ua hiko” or “ wearing cloth upon their heads” (). This religious practice caused great outrage among non Mormon citizens who thought Mormonism was an unsafe way for untrained individuals to join a growing nation (). Consequently , when Brigham Young ordered his followers to leave Nauvoo they did so via wagon train traveling through Great Plains states such as Nebraska before finally reaching California . 2) Rapid Growth: Between 1890 & 1910 Orinda’s population exploded from 100 residents -to 1,000! - thanks largely to new technologies like irrigation systems – which allowed farmers immense acreage for production ..... And friends!: numerous local businesses thrived thanks partly – but not solely – to friendships formed along route such as those between locals & Mormons (. See Figs 3-4 ). 3) A Golden Age: 1944 -1970: As WWII unfolded across Western Europe Leaders began calling for more volunteers available especially towards military campaigns ..... So too did businessmen respond with excitement watch recruitments swell throughout Midwest ....… With hostilities waning things slowly began unraveling back home with increasing friction ...... Sudden drop off : 1970 -> 1990 -> 2000 4) Demographic Transition: 2001 -> 2010: Due largely To immigration changes (particularly Latinos), crime rates increased significantly….. leading some punditsTo predictAnOrindanDemographicTrend reversal….. But despite this risk …….[?] events transpired exactly opposite……..2010->2015
