Orinda is a small town in the foothills of the San Andreas Fault. The population was 1,898 as of 2010. It is located about an hour south of Sacramento and two hours north of Stockton. Orinda, California (population: 25,000) is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded on November 10, 1887 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George H. Clements as a transportation depot for their new gold mine. The town became a ghost town after the discovery of gold in nearby Sutter Valley on September 24, 1849. The first post office was established at Orinda on October 3, 1888. The name of the town was changed to Orinda on January 5, 1893 after it became the county seat of Contra Costa County. The population reached 25,000 in 1970 and has since shrunk to 15,000 residents. The George H. Clements Mining Company lost its gold mining operation in 1902 and ceased operations permanently in 1903; however, some of its remains are still present including a mill complex and small scale miners' families who still live near Orinda today.
