Orinda, California is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County, adjacent to Contra Costa City and its namesake creek. The population was 54,552 at the 2010 census. The first European settlement in Orinda was by Spanish traders in 1776. The original town site was near present-day South Park Avenue and Dublin Street. Development began around 1820 with the construction of a series of small shops and residences by early settlers including Captain George Fenton and his wife Charity Fenton. A school was built here in 1826 and soon became an important center for education in this part of California. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century as agriculture became more prevalent and new businesses opened up such as a millinery store, grocer, livery stable, post office, brewery, doctor's office, cattle ranching operation and several churches (St John's Catholic Church (1884), First Presbyterian Church (1893), Methodist Episcopal Church (1912)), among others). In 1916 Orinda had 1st grade through 12th grades; it then transitioned to high school through 16th grade until it became an eighth-grade school district in 1979. A major industry during this time were lumber mills which produced most of Orinda's building supplies such as flooring and doors throughout much of the 20th century before becoming less common due to competition from other industries.
