The Orinda National Guard was organized on November 1, 1862 by the California Legislature. The organization was designated as a Regular Army Volunteers unit and first mobilized on December 10, 1862. Initially stationed at Butte County Barracks in Donner Park, the guard served as an unarmed auxiliary force to local law enforcement officials during the early days of the American Civil War. On July 14, 1865, following the end of the American Civil War and the disbanding of all volunteer forces in California, The Orinda National Guard was folded into the regular army. The unit remained inactive until reorganization on October 15, 1886 when it became part of Fourth Brigade (Lincolnshire Regiment) Battalion (Fremont County). On March 6th 1907 it became Third Brigade (Los Angeles Regiment) Battalion(Alameda County). In 1912 it became First Brigade (New York State Militia) Battalion( Contra Costa County). On May 1st 1916 it became Seventh Brigade (Arizona Infantry Regiment) Battalion(Sonoma County). In 1940 it became Ninth Brigade (California National Guard) battalion( Riverside County). Currently there is no active Orinda National Guard regiment within California.
Orinda, California is a census-designated place in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located south of Yosemite National Park and east of Stockton. The population was 22,824 at the 2010 census. Orinda has been called "the most serene town in Silicon Valley." The first Europeans to visit Orinda were three Fathers who journeyed through the region on their way to explore the new world in 1795-96. Rancho Oroville was granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 6, 1847. At that time there were 3,000 people living hereabouts and it became a booming cattle ranching community with families working 20 miles (32 kilometers) apart on ranches near the river Surrounding today's city limits date back to 1859 when some seventy families had settled here including twenty ranchers and their six thousand head of stock. With railroad construction drawing settlers westward in1873, Orinda took off with an influx of men, women and children drawn by paydays from mines, mills and other businesses dotting Southern California; jobs included many skilled labor positions such as blacksmiths and wagonmakers as well as agricultural work in orchards and vineyards until prohibition made these activities illegal in 1933. In 1925 John Diller founded Diller & Company which grew into one of Silicon Valley’s largest industrialists with holdings including RCA Victor Records (1948), Northern Broadcasting Corporation (1957), Computer Associates International Incorporated (1983) among others In 1980 he sold his interest in Diller & Company for $1 billion becoming one of America’s richest men
