Orinda was founded by John C. Frémont in 1848 as a small farming town on the eastern edge of California. The town grew quickly, and by 1868 it had reached its present size. In 1912, during World War I, Orinda made history when it became one of only two American cities to receive military training from Great Britain in order to help prepare for war. In 1923, following enactment of Chapter 1510 (the Municipal Code), Orindan merged with neighboring Richmond Heights into what is now called Contra Costa County (itself formed from part of Alameda County in 1889). Today, Orindan remains an important community with strong civic pride that continues to grow throughout Contra Costa County.
