Oroville is a small town located in Inyo County, California. The population was 1,980 at the 2010 census. Oroville consists of two villages: Oroville and Woolsey. Woolsey is the older village and has a larger population. The first settlers to Oroville arrived in 1877 and named it after José de la Garza y Costilla, who had led an expedition into the Sacramento Valley in 1849. By 1896, all of Inyo County had been acquired by the United States and renamed Yuma County; however, towns in southern Inyo remain unincorporated today because they are within present-day Ifugao Municipality. The post office at Woolsey opened on January 16, 1888 (the date that both towns were incorporated), but due to low populations there was no mail service between them for many years. A stagecoach line ran through Woolsey from 1918 to 1951 delivering mail from Reno to Los Angeles; however this service was cut off due to World War II hostilities. Today there is only one farm road that leads into town from the east side of town which connects with State Route 395 about 3 miles west of downtown In 1913, Oroville experienced its first tornado outbreak when three tornadoes touched down near town on August 10th and 11th collectively leaving four people dead and thirty-six injured across six counties including Logan Heights in San Francisco Bay Area (including young children playing out on local streets).
