The Oroville Army Depot gift history began on December 10, 1942 with the purchase of a jeep by the Third Battalion, Ninth Regiment, California National Guard. The military vehicle was used as a personnel carrier and was renamed "Jeep" in honor of its previous owner. It served as the battalion's first army transport until it was sold to the Navy on October 1, 1945. The Jeep was then donated to the Department of Defense on November 12, 1945 and given to the United States Military Academy at West Point for use as an academy vehicle. The Jeep remained there until it was delivered back to the Department of Defense on April 20, 1948. It served as part of the United States Army's Sixth Infantry Division from 1948-1952 and later became part of Combat Arms Research Center (CARC) at Fort Benning in Georgia where it remains today.
