Oroville, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. It is the most populous city in Butte County and the second largest city in Kern County, both of which are part of the Bay Area. The population was 74,815 as of 2016. Oroville was founded by American gold rush pioneers on November 14, 1848 as an agricultural community named after George Oroño, a Mexican landowner who had invested in this area. The first post office was established at Oroville on December 9th, 1849. In 1860, when California became an Independent State, Oroville became its capital. When San Francisco moved to California from Northern California in 1852, it took with it all the old county seats - including Oroville - and so on October 15th 1853 (the day before incorporation), George Wetherill erected his home at 1207 North First Street as our provisional courthouse for Butte County seat until another building could be erected. The City of Oroville began to form on January 1st 1861 when citizens voted to annex portions of Butte and Kern Counties into their new state without having yet received official annexation notices from these counties. The total population growth during this time period was unprecedented due to both an influx of farmers from Northern California looking for cheap farmland following Gold Rush Fever while also people moving out of larger cities such as San Francisco because they were not interested in becoming involved in such a wild frontier town like Dodge City or Cheyenne Wells; all while still living within easy driving distance either through Sacramento or Fresno). During World War II many veterans brought their families here and started various businesses that continue today such as Ford Motor Company’s local assembly plant which manufactured vehicles for export (and continues today) and Kaiser Permanente which provides health care services including mental health/psychiatric treatment; however many residents also left for better opportunities elsewhere during this war-time boomtown phenomenon known colloquially as “The Great Migration” although some actually returned home later on (e.g., my father did).
