On November 3rd Company H was organized at Woolsey Mills by Captain James Wickersham with men from Butte County and Yuba County. Company D was organized at Eureka on December 8th 1861 under command of Captain George Armstrong with men from Modoc County and Shasta County On January 14th 1862 Captain William Fenton relieved Captain Armstrong of command of Company D for cause unknown Captain Fenton served until his death on July 10th 1862 In 1863 there were new armories built in the town which included: Armory No 2 (now building 4), Armory No 3 (now building 5) and Armory No 6 (now building 7). It wasn’t until 1866 when Fort Simcoe became operational that Guard units could garrison it permanently . The National Guard was created on July 8, 1790 in the Massachusetts Constitution as a separate Militia to supplement and protect the citizens of that state. The National Guard continued to be organized into Units until 1861 when it was merged into the Army. The first unit called the Suffolk County Regiment was organized on November 3, 1792 at Boston. On September 25, 1814, New York State’s 1st Regiment of Foot Infantry were raised from militia members in Erie County who had served in the War of 1812. In 1815, Rhode Island’s 2nd Regiment of Foot Infantry also were raised from militia members who had served in that war. On May 4th, 1861, Confederate regulars under General Robert E. Lee attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina and soon after Union troops arrived to reinforce the garrison they began shelling the fort with canisters filled with grapeshot which caused extensive damage and loss of life. As a result of this attack and others like it throughout 1861-1865 there was an increased demand for soldiers and militias across both Union and Confederate states. This led to increased recruitment quotas for each side which caused many people to become involved with either the military or militia instead of simply signing up for service because they felt it would be their civic duty or because they wanted revenge on those responsible for causing their loved ones harm (the Confederacy).

Marshall, who had come to help cure the cholera pandemic that was sweeping the continent at the time. The population of Oroville grew rapidly during its early years, reaching over 1,000 residents by 1868. However, the Panic of 1873 caused a sharp decline in business activity in the town and it soon lost its status as an important agricultural center. In 1886, however, Oroville became a city and continued to grow rapidly under its new name until it reached its current size of about 20,000 residents in 1968. Oroville is located on the Sacramento River near where it flows into San Francisco Bay. It is bordered by Arcadia to the north-northwest and Chico County to the east-east.
