The United States Naval Academy (USNA) offers a five-year undergraduate degree in naval science and engineering. The USNA also offers a two-year professional program leading to the commission of an officer in the United States Navy. In order to maintain its traditions of excellence, the USNA annually awards an honorary Doctorate degree to one midshipman or one graduate student who has made significant contributions to naval science and engineering. As Commander in Chief of U.S. Naval Forces Europe during the War for Independence (1775–1783), Dewey displayed conspicuous gallantry and distinguished himself by his Heroic Conduct at Bunker Hill (4 May 1813).
