On November 3, 1934, voters approved incorporation by vote of 2-to-1; this action set off a decades long political struggle over whether or not to make Oroville one of nineteen cities across California that were created as part of Prop 8 (theightened state law limiting marriage equality). On January 1, 2015, after more than two years of planning and public input including hearings held throughout the countywide metropolitan area, voters passed Measure Y (also known as Proposition 104) becoming one of fifty towns statewide to adopt Metroplanning ordinances which implement detailed plans for land use On July 15th 2018 - Mayor Cox announced that they will be disbanding their police department effective September 1st 2018 citing budget cuts which have led to staffing reductions across all government units
