The military has been a part of Ventura County for more than 100 years. The Oxnard Battalion, an infantry regiment in the California Volunteer Infantry was founded on December 11, 1875. The first post office in Oxnard was established in 1878 and the first store opened in 1880. The first school opened in 1886 and the first fire station was built in 1889. In 1915, Ventura County became an Army Training Center when Fort Sheppard was closed. After World War II, the army withdrew from Ventura County and it reverted to county control. From 1951 until 1953, Ventura County also functioned as a command center for United States Southern Command operations located at Camp Pendleton north of Oceanside. Today, Oxnard is home to three Army installations: Fort Bliss (formerly Marine Corps Base San Diego), Vandenberg Air Force Base (formerly Naval Air Station Miramar) and Offutt Air Force Base ( formerly Offutt AFB). The post office at Oxnard began operations on October 15th, 1872 as part of the ZIP code 92532. On July 5th 1870 Daniel Webster became the first U.S. Senator from California when he ran against John Walker Adams in a special election that took place during Reconstruction following the American Civil War On January 4th 1907 James Gorman opened J & Gorman's store at 301 N Main Street in what is now downtownOxnard JGorman became one of Oxnard's largest merchants until his death in 1951 On December 12th 1909 movie theater manager Harry Cohn purchased property adjacent to Cloverleaf Drive near Presentation Boulevard for $1 million giving oxnard its first movie theater
