It borders the cities of Camarillo and Simi Valley to the north and east, Pacifica to the west and south, and Carpinteria to the southeast. The area now known as Oxnard was first inhabited by Mono people who lived near present-day Thousand Oaks and Ventura. In 1777 Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico (St. John's Cathedral) on Rancho Santa Margarita in what is now Oxnard. The mission served as a religious center for many years before its closure in 1853. In 1875, white settlers named themselves "The Pueblo League" after they won election to control a portion of Ventura County through property voting using oxen teams rather than horses or wagons. They selected Oxnard as their new town because it was one mile from each other on two routes connecting Rancho Cucamonga with Los Angeles via three parallel valleys: Garza Canyon (north), Topanga Canyon (south), and Canoga Creek (west). The first post office opened in 1879; it was renamed Oxnard in 1903 when it became an incorporated city.
