Oxnard, California is a city located in Ventura County, California. The population was 34,939 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Ventura County behind Santa Barbara. The city was founded in 1887 by George Garvey and named for his ranch Oxnard Ranch. The first store opened there in 1888. In 1892, Oxnard became an incorporated town when it joined with other towns in Ventura County to form the new county of Ventura. In 1909, Oxnard changed its name to Oxnard after John Oxenford, a civic leader who had championed development in that area. In 1922, the community annexed the unincorporated communities of East Santa Clara and West Saugatuck and became one municipality under its new name. The Metrolink line reached Oxnard on May 15th 1886 when Chas Burchfield built a bridge over Redondo Creek between his ranch at Encino and Garvey's Ranch near what is now Playa del Rey Boulevard (now called Ventura Boulevard). This made it possible for regular people from all over Southern California to get to their jobs at various businesses along this newly developed route such as Jardine Rubber Company (later Jardine-Heckscher), Paramount Pictures studios (later Paramount Communications), Wernher von Braun’s American Rocket Labdy Laboratories (later Rockwell International) and many others during those early days of mass transportation while also providing easy access to local grocery stores and restaurants which dotted both sides of the tracks along today's major thoroughfare - Ventura Boulevard - providing residents with everything they needed within minutes or just steps away without ever having to leave their homes!
On November 3, 1850, the first post office in Oxnard was established by J.F. Thomson with a corner lot at Second and G Streets. The town of Oxnard was named after the Oxnard River which ran through it. The original flour mill on the banks of the river was built in 1854, and began to produce flour for customers in Ventura County. In 1865, an iron foundry was started in town and produced nails and other metal products until World War II when production shifted to shipbuilding. In 1953, Pershing Drive (today's First Street) was dedicated as a state highway which followed the route of today's Oxnard-Pomona Boulevard. On October 1, 1957, Oxnard became part of the new county of Ventura; its first mayor was Leland Stanford Jr.. In 1959, Pershing Drive became State Route 163 Alternate (SR 163). The city of Oxnard annexed portions of neighboring Santa Monica on February 15, 1964; this annexation created what is now called "Oxnard-Santa Monica" area On May 1st 1990 votes were taken to change/rename SR 165 from Desert Road to First Street within the city limits
