Oxnard (formerly Oxnard, California) is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 54,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway in Southern Ventura County. The city is bordered by Redondo Beach to the northwest and West Hills to the northeast. The land that would become Oxnard was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. Rancho Santa Fe de la Laguna was given to Manuel Nieto in 1839 and became part of the Rancho Los Cuchillas Mexicanland grant later that year. In 1846, José Maria Hidalgo granted land east of Oxnard for a ranch named Las Buenaventuras. This area eventually became known as Encinitas because of its many trees and mountains covered with redwoods and other palms. In 1853, an act of Congress created Ventura County, which included present-day Ventura and most of what would become Oxnard. The town of Oxnard was incorporated on November 3, 1855.
