Oxnard, California is a city located in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 66,717 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name Oxnard comes from "Oxi" meaning "fortress." This place was first settled by the Puebloans in 1777 and became part of Rancho San Vicente de la Riva (now Oxnard) in 1878. The settlement at Oxnard began as an agricultural community that grew around the oxen used to pull wagons between Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. In 1892, a railroad station was built on what is now Soquel Boulevard and Oxnard Boulevard opened to serve the townspeople. By 1910, small businesses had started up all around town and it became known as "the new Oxnard". In 1917, during World War I, local veterans formed a military group called the 1st Marine Regiment (later Marines) which formed Camp Pendleton for training purposes on land donated by George Condon. On September 12th of that year, Mayor Harry Westphal proclaimed October 15th as Veterans Day in honor of these Marines who had fought for our country during World War I. In 1940, during World War II, General Douglas MacArthur's Ninth Air Force flew out from Camp Lemonnier near Saipan to link up with Japanese forces fighting against American forces on Guam. Some 3200 airmen were lost here; most were KI-8s downed over Islay while en route home to Japan following their combat mission over Guadalcanal or New Guinea on August 14th 1942—the day after America entered into war with Japan! As such this event is often cited as one of the largest aerial losses ever suffered by any nation in warfare...and still remains unparalleled even today! On February 2nd 1951 two students at Chico Junior College were killed when their car collided with another vehicle travelling northbound on connector road east of Oxnard just south of State Route 162 about 16 miles east-northeast of Chico market center; this tragedy immediately closed both state routes for several days due to high trafficvolume!. Since then it has been reopened but only limited access because there have been many other accidents involving vehicles since then not related to school activities! Today'sOxnard occupies an earlier stage within its history where agriculture & commerce dominated; early 20th century buildings are largely intact including post office/bank building & corrals along Soquel Blvd., business district stretched along First Street downtown (& present day Main Street), millinery store off First Avenue (& present day Ventura Drive), Hwy 101 bridge across former Channel Islands reservoir
