The California National Guard has a long and proud history in Oxnard. The organization was first organized on December 12, 1861, when the Santa Clara County Volunteers (now the California Military District) were called to assist in the American Civil War. In 1871, the volunteer unit was renamed the Ventura County Volunteers and changed its mission to regulation of immigration. In 1903, the Ventura County Volunteers became part of the larger California National Guard and today serve as one of America’s oldest national guard units. The unit has made many contributions to our state and country over the years, including service during World War II; providing support to local law enforcement efforts during riots and protests throughout Southern California; and countless other deployments. Today, members of both federal military districts are proud to wear Californian National Guard uniforms and protect our citizens from harm. In addition to serving their community with distinction, Guardsmen gather annually for musterings at Fort Bragg in North Carolina where they participate in annual exercises simulating combat operations overseas.

The 1st Battalion (Majors) was activated at Oxnard Army Air Field and the 2nd Battalion (Airmen) at Santa Ana Army Air Field. On December 4, 1942, the 3rd Battalion (Airmen) was activated and placed intoactivated on January 17, 1945.
Oxnard, California is a city in Southern California. It is located on the Santa Rosa Peninsula, bordered by Ventura County to the north and east, Los Angeles County to the south and west, and San Luis Obispo County to the northwest. The population was 181,827 at the 2010 census. The town of Oxnard was first settled in 1847 by men from Northern California. They were looking for land that would be available for Rancho Cucamonga (now Carson City), which they had purchased from José Joaquin Moraga. In 1853, David Henshall built a small homestead on what is now Pico Boulevard near Oxnard Pier. By 1857, he had three buildings—a storehouse, a barn and a home—marking oxen trails leading into his property. In 1861 Tom Mix started trading goods with Native Americans in what is now Fillmore Valley after riding his horse overland from San Francisco Bay Area Trailhead at Point Mugu to fill up with watermelons brought down by Mission Dolores Indians during their winter grazing season outside of Santa Barbara. He named this area Fillmore Valley because it reminded him of Fillmore Street in San Francisco where he bought watermelons. In 1870 George Hearn established an agricultural cooperative with other farmers near present-day Ventura Boulevard and Camarillo Road which became known as Hercules Farms after its founder’s great-grandson who helped found Hercules College in Oxnard back in 1907. A post office was established at Hercules Farms in 1877; it was moved to its current location on Camarillo Road in 1915 when nearby Ventura Avenue became part of Oxnard city limits
