The region also played a major role in supplying food for soldiers during World War II as well as producing munitions for our allies . After the war many businesses closed down but new ones started up such as Pabst Brewing Company which became one of Californias largest breweries followed by Safeway Supermarkets (later Kroger) which anchored the town's grocery store scene until 1997 when it merged with Albertsons
