Oxnard, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 54,291 at the 2010 census. Oxnard's history goes back to 1871 when it was founded as an agricultural town on the Oxnard Peninsula by George Fenton and his wife Kate. The name "Oxnard" comes from the word "ox" meaning oxen and "nard" meaning port or harbour. Oxnard became an industrial center in the early 20th century with shipbuilding and other industries but now mostly relies on agriculture for its economy. The area that would become Oxnard was first populated by indigenous Ohlone people who hunted and gathered plants and animals within their territory. In 1785, Russian fur trader Pavel Petrovich Chazaroff discovered land east of Ventura Harbor that would later be called Oxnard after him. In 1871, George Fenton opened up a small grocery store on Yerba Buena Island in what is now known as downtown Oxnard. One year later he added a post office tohis business which functioned until 1915 when voters approved a measure allowing mail service only between Ventura County and Los Angeles through Los Angeles Station (later renamed South Bay Station). This allowed Forney & Co., one of Ventura County’s largest companies to expand into Southern California without having to go through San Francisco or Sacramento. As more businesses began opening up inOxnard they started hiring people so by 1916 there were six full-time employees at Forney & Co.'s main office located at 5555 S Capitol Ave., also known as “The Gilded Age Building” because of its high ceilings and sumptuous finishes including marble flooring, GOLDEN WINGS chandeliers, Tiffany lamps and statuary inside! Over time several other companies joined Forney &Co.: Emigrant Foods (1917), Copley Plastics (1920), Lumbermen’s Mutual Insurance Company (1922), Dow Chemical Company (1925) before finally being merged into Shell Oil Company in 1951! Although many businesses closed down during World War II due to wartime production shortages; such as Emigrant Foods which lost all of their products due to rationing; Forney &Co.'s plant continued operations until 1945 when it entered into receivership overseen by the War Assets Administration due to overspending during World War II! After being placed under government ownership again following the war Butch Cassidy Enterprises leased the company's facilities back from Shell Oil Company effective 1 January 1947 permanently endingForney &Co.'s long running presence in Oxnard! Although most aspects of this period remain unknown today many believe that this event marks one of the last times Vandenberg Air Force Base would be used outside of military purposes! It wasn't until 1951 that giant American chemical manufacturer Shell oil Enterprizes acquired Vandenberg AFB becoming one of its first customers leading ultimately to major expansions across both civilian and military sectors! With increasing international competition these days it is interesting to note how much has changed hands since then especially given current political landscape!)
