The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to friends and allies in the Pacific Grove area. The USAF has sentimental value in many ways, but one of its most cherished traditions is the air force deployed gift history. In 1951, then-Captain JamesONeill commissioned a spending spree for the USAF's Asia-Pacific Command (APAC) when he was promoted to commander. His priority was to spruce up APAC and promote US military engagement in what was then an emerging region. He ordered that all gifts sent from Headquarters, Pacific Grove should be "an expression of appreciation for our service." Over time, gifts from Headquarters, Pacific Grove have ranged from beautiful pieces of jewelry to aircraft parts and other equipment. A variety of specialties have been donated over the years, including both combat aircraft and non-combat items such as radios, missiles and tanks. Gifts are also sometimes given on behalf of visiting dignitaries or groups who may be unable to attend official ceremonies due to geographic limitations or other reasons. One particularly touching example is the gift delivered in honor of Rear Admiral John Condon during his visit to PG in 2009. Admiral Condon had recently served as Commander-in-Chief U.S Forces Japan (CINJ), which oversaw American forces based at Naval Base Yokosuka after Japan withdrew from World War II hostilities on September 2nd 1945. Vice President Joe Biden personally presented Admiral Condon with a new USS Fitzgerald carrier battle group submarine - one of only two such vessels ever acquired by the US Navy - as well as additional gifts including patrol boats, helicopters and communications systems. Rear Admiral Condon said afterwards that it was his "most honoured day" since taking command at Yokosuka four years earlier; he added that he looked forward eagerly to using PG's resources more effectively within Japan's revived military structure post-war.[1]

Pacific Grove is a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, located on the eastern side of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is one of the oldest towns in California and has been around since 1800. The town was founded by Captain George Vancouver, who explored and charted parts of modern-day California. The name "Pacific Grove" comes from Spanish La Paloma, meaning "the rookery." The first European to see and map the area now known as Pacific Grove was Captain George Vancouver in 1775. He named it Monterey Peninsula after his estate there, which he had bought from Major Manuel Nieto de Salinas y Villalobos. In 1846, General Antonio Luna moved his army from Monterey to El Sobrante County to attack Joaquin Miller's forces at Sutter's Mill. At night, Lopez's men surrounded Marshal John Copley's retreating unit and cut off its retreat with only five men remaining alive. A fierce battle ensued where Lopez lost many men but managed to take three guns and two officers captive before they were led into captivity by Mexican general Ramon Escobar. Lopez then began planning an uprising against Mexico that would succeed where Santa Clara had failed in 1842. On January 25, 1850 – less than a week after Lopez’s victory over Miller at Sutter’s Mill – he called a meeting at Malibu Creek for his rebels under leadership of José Joaquín Mora y Blanco (Jorge Luis Borges). Their goal was to overthrow Mexico City government by force if necessary; however, no action occurred until 1862 when Lopez finally died in exile while trying to return home disguised as an American citizen
