The first Europeans to visit what is now Pacific Grove were Spanish explorers in 1795. They named it San Francisco de Asís after General José Antonio∗ Molina who had burnished the coast of California for Spain before his death in 1806. The name “Pacific Grove” was given to it by Captain John Davenport in 1821 when he noted that there was a grove of trees on the east side of Mission Bay which he thought might be called “Pleasant Grove” or some such thing because it appeared to him as if they grew there naturally. A few years later Commodore James Cook also visited this part of Santa Clara County and recorded that he saw several groves of trees near where modern-day Pacific Grove stands but no one has ever been able to confirm this claim. A number of people have searched for this alleged Captain Cook sighting but no evidence has been found either way so far! In 1906, Mrs. Anna Thornton (1863-1946) donated land around her home at 7400 block 240th Ave., just north of current day Pacific Grove, which became known as Thornton Park after her donation. This area became an educational center with Msgr. Arthur Ashe serving as its first superintendent from 1926-1947 and then Drs.-Edwin Mclntyre and Bernard Schwartz from 1949-1963; both men having received honorary degrees from UCLA School Of Dentistry during their terms as trustees/directors respectively). Pacific Grove began as an agricultural community that grew up around Mission Bay on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley due largely to Rancho Antelope Mexican Land grantee Juan Bautista Alvarado's efforts in 1850s to improve farming conditions in what would become known as Northern California (the location nowknown as Santa Clara County). By 1860 most of present day Pacific Grove had been developed into a small town with approximately 1,500 residents living primarily within Mission BayVillage until 1870 when they all moved out onto new Lots 3 and 4 bounded by State Street (northwest corner), Fremont Avenue (southwest corner), Ira Brown Road (eastbound), mission bay Boulevard (westbound), and American River between gamasutra Drive northwardly towards Menlo Park while lots 5 & 6 continued undeveloped until 1910 when rancho Alvarado sold them all off resulting in today’s boundaries! In 1868 Japanese immigrants arrived at San Francisco docks looking for passage back home across the equator on their ships Yamalolla Maru about halfway through their voyage - these passengers were given permission by United States president Abraham Lincoln not too long afterwards when rioting crew erupted ashore aboard USS Illinois causing $2 million worth damage including 2 vessels lost with lossof life - thus beginning America’s largest maritime insurance policy fraud investigation ever launched by any government agency !! The town was founded mainly because local farmers wanted easy access to water supplies being situated nextto missions built over 300 years ago!!! Grants were also given out allowing townships like PacificGrove develop gradually without becoming city limits!!! Many fine homes still stand today throughout much part Seal Beach district

They named their new land "Isla de la Bodega" after the winery they saw near Mendocino Point on the mainland. In 1769, Captain John D'Arcy claimed part of Rancho Santa Clara for Spain from Native Americans living there before that date. In 1845, American Commodore Matthew Cushman sailed into San Francisco Bay and anchored off Point Reyes while exploring the coast of California. He noticed a large piece of wood lying onshore and called it "the Arroyo del Buen Pastor." The name stuck and in 1850 Ulysses S. Grant granted parts of RanchoSanta Clara to Wm Halsey Seymour for use as a military post during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). On January 16, 1853 by order of then Governor Manuel Nieto Monterey realigned both sections of Rancho Santa Clara eastward from Pacheco Pass with Mission San José to become what is now Pacific Grove Village . This village was located just south of present day Donwood Drive in what would eventually become downtown Pacific Grove . There was also an earthen rampart built around this village (which still remains) which served as its defense against Indians coming down the Peninsula via Mount Tamalpais National Monument today’s Interstate 5 corridorwidest point in town between Donwood Drive and Highway 9
