Pacific Grove is a small town in Santa Clara County, California, located on the San Francisco Peninsula. It lies south of San Jose and east of Palo Alto. The population was 7,373 at the 2010 census. Pacific Grove is one of the few remaining towns in California with a full-time Hispanic majority. The first people to live in what is now Pacific Grove were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants near the present day Mill Creek Park. They named their settlement "Turtle Beach" because they found turtle shells there from time to time. In 1846, while gold was still being discovered in California, some prospectors decided to settle hereabouts due to its proximity to San Francisco and because of its rich maritime history dating back to missions like Monterey Bay and Isla de la Cruz. By 1850, many more settlers had arrived here including many farmers, mechanics, traders and office workers who founded various businesses such as banks, grain elevators and hotels along with Methodist churches and other religious organizations which still operate in the community today. The townspeople built a series of wooden buildings around Town Common until they acquired land on which they built more permanent residences between 1868-1872 by donating or taking out mortgages on their properties. Most notably are the Historic Districts of Craigie House (1868), Mayfair (1871), Woodward's Plantation (1872) and Government Hill (1901). Today’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church was dedicated on July 17th 1860 by Bishop James Gibbons just three years after his arrival in Santa Clara County from Mexico City as pastor of Mission Santa Clara de Asís under Spanish rule. One significant event that took place during this period included Japanese internment during World War II when all Japanese nationals living within two miles OF San Francisco were ordered into concentration camps known as “ Naval Air Station Corral” which sits atop hills neighboring Pacific Grove today.. In 1958, when Interstate 80 was completed through central Santa Clara County, parts of Pacific Grove began experiencing rapid population growth because it became an easily accessible location for commuters commuting into Silicon Valley then booming Southern California city centers like Burlingame/San Mateo/El Sobrante/Palo Alto etc., causing many local businesses to close or move away including several stores owned by Mrs John Witherow whose husband developed Hewlett Packard adjacent to Town Common where he also ran his bakery which remain open today as The Ralph Lauren Bakery Incorporated serving generations since 1963!
