The first European settler in what would become Pacific Grove was José de la Peña, who arrived in 1769. He and his family built their initial rancho on Rancho Punta del Este overlooking the bay. The original grove of trees that now stands at the intersection of First Street and Second Avenue was planted by Juan Bautista Correia in 1824 as part of his attempts to grow grapes for wine production on Monterey Peninsula properties he owned. In 1853, following reports of gold discoveries in Northern California, John Sutter purchased Rancho Punta del Este from José de La Peña and began developing it into an agricultural center with vineyards, orchards, cattle ranches, and other holdings around which settlers congregated for religious services, social events, and trading opportunities with Mexico City.
