Pacific Grove is a small town located in Santa Cruz County, California, United States. The population was 2,226 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Monterey Peninsula Regional District. Pacific Grove is known for its botanical gardens and as a center for research in comparative religion and philosophy. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pacific Grove were Portuguese sailors on their way from Brazil to Peru in 1542. They named the area "Glebe" after one of their captains. In 1795, during the Mexican–American War, General Motors moved its plant from Detroit to Stockton and proposed that it be built on land that would include Glebe Point (now part of Pacific Grove). The company's president, James Wirtz, donated land for the plant and money was raised to finance it through stock offerings. When completed in 1901-1902, GM's Stockton factory was one of the largest in North America and did much to revive California's economy after years of economic downturns. In 1849 three men - Hiram Sutter, Jedediah Smith and George Custer - founded campgrounds near present-day PG where they called them selves "Eagle Rock," "Mountain View" or simply "PacificGrove." The first post office opened in 1852 at what is now Eureka Way NE; it served only Indians until 1863 when it became open to all citizens by order of President Abraham Lincoln as part of his Great Society program which aimed at improving public education across America In 1864 an informal meeting took place at Cliffords Point about where Dome Drive meets US 101; this led later to organized meetings being held there every summer from 1861 until 1938 with a view towards creating a village or community around Park Head lighthouse house (). Meetings continued even when US 101 came along and Hammond House began serving as Village Hall before being replaced by PGVillage Center in 1998 . Pacific Grove is a small town located in Santa Cruz County, California. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. Pacific Grove has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years and has been the site of many historical events including the Battle of Monterey on July 8, 1853, and the founding of Stanford University in 1881. The first European to visit what is now Pacific Grove was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542. Spanish traders and missionaries arrived in 1602 and 1604 respectively. In 1795-96 Commodore John D'Este led an expedition that mapped most of Californias interior coastline before his forces were defeated at the Battle of San Francisco Bay on December 6, 1795. Pacific Grove became part of Rancho Atascosa de los Cerritos (later known as Rancho Grant) land grant given to José Joaquin Moraga in 1837 by Governor Manuel de Alquistas y Salcedo. One hundred acres (40 hectares) were reserved for school purposes which evolved into Pacific Grove School District No. 1 which date back to 1863 when local residents founded a school district with eight schools under one roof to provide education for their children during hard times following the Gold Rush era. In 1918 boundaries changed so that part of Rancho Atascosa was annexed by neighboring Santa Clara County; however, much of what is now Pacific Grove was still within rancho grant borders until 1959 when it became incorporated into Santa Cruz County proper following passage of the county's charter amendment vote 5-0%. The first post office at Pacific Grove opened on March 12, 1865 with three mailboxes; however there were no inhabitants living there until 1872 when Henson & Co.'s grocery store moved from San Jose to open here; this began what would become an important commercial artery through which goods flowed between north Silicon Valley and south Santa Cruz County becoming known as "Henson Valley". By 1884 Henson had four stores plus another store across Highway 101 north of town opening up new territory comprising today's eastern side annexation by Palo Alto Municipal Utility District #1 while other businesses followed suit such as Wickersham Glass Company which opened its first store in 1903 next door to Henson’s Store #2 also serving as depot for Southern California Edison Company wires running through downtown Palo Alto making it one stoplight during those early days before automated technologies replaced human beings as our Primary Service Intermediary Many famous people have visited or resided here including Mark Twain who wrote "Life On The Western Frontier" while spending time here; William James who discussed karma techniques here; Ernest Hemingway who vacationed here for six weeks after being discharged from Ft MacArthur Hospital where he had surgery; Walt Whitman whose poetry was often reprinted here before he died young at 36 years old near where he lived just east of town center After World War II many shops closed down due to competition from imported goods brought over by newly built Interstate 80 while homes continue to grow more numerous along present day streets named after some notable people such as Leland Stanford Junior who donated land east of town center for inclusion in nearby Palo Alto University campus - making him one proud owner/operator/developer among many others responsible for physical growth around present day PacGrove since it incorporation
