The Marines of the Pacific Grove, California Battalion are some of the most decorated and well-respected units in the Marine Corps. They have fought in many wars, including World War II, and continue to serve today. The battalion was originally activated in 1942 as a rifle company within Company C of the First Marine Division. In 1946, it was redesignated as an infantry battalion and served in various campaigns throughout the war. After hostilities ended, the battalion returned home to California where they were again re-activated for service during post-war reconstruction. The battalion has since been disbanded but its legacy lives on through unit traditions and individual members who have continued to fight for their country. Today, there is a Marine battalion stationed at Pacific Grove that continues to serve our country with distinction. Pacific Grove is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Pacific Coast and is known for its redwood forests, beaches, and wineries. The name "Pacific Grove" comes from the Juan de Fuca Strait between Puget Sound and the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to visit what is now Pacific Grove was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542. He named it Isla de los Hornos after his ship Admiral Diego Fernández de Oviedo's discovery of that area in 1502. In 1821 a group of Russians founded a mission here called Pueblo del Arimatecumpec which means Rancho Arimatecumpec but later became part of the United States as part of the Mexican-American War Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1865 when California became a state, Pacific Grove was added to Santa Clara County as part of that state's division into townships by Governor John Witte Jr.. The local post office continued to be called "Pueblo del Arimatecumpec" until it was renamed "Pacific Grove" in 1925 after nearby Mission San José de Asis (now Mission Dolores) became one of California's first Catholic churches. In 1906 an Act of Congress made Pacific Grove an incorporated village with full voting rights; it held these rights until 1959 when they were transferred to Santa Clara County under article 24 of the 1935 county charter. Pacific Grove is a small town in California, about an hour's drive from San Francisco. The name comes from the nearby Strait of Juan de Fuca and its deep channel, the Pescadero Channel. In 1847, Captain George Vancouver explored this area and named it Pacific Grove after his home island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands. The first Europeans to visit Pacifc Grove were American Explorers Jedediah Clark and Kit Carson in 1847-48 while on their way tofind new land that would become California. They set up a trading post at what is now called Marina del Rey Boulevard and built a small cabin there. From here they made three visits backpacking through the forested hills near where they now live. In 1850, John Sloat established another trading post at Point Arena on Santa Cruz Island which became famous for its wine production (the current Sloat winery was founded in 1865). The first Americans to vineyards in California were Charles Wernher von Braun and his brother Johann Gottfried Wilhelm Von Braun who bought some plots of land near present day Pacific Grove along with other investors including banker Jacob Goldenweiser. WhenCalifornia became a state in 1850, Wernher von Braun was elected governor and ordered all vines stopped so that he could assess how much wine could be produced before it interfered with trade with Mexico; however, grapevine lovers continued to grow grapes without government sanction until 1855 when new laws allowed for private industry as well as state regulation of grape growing activities
Pacific Grove is located in San Mateo County, California. The city of Pacific Grove was founded in 1879 by the brothers Isaac and Samuel Morse. In 1906, the city annexed adjacent land to form a new municipality which became known as Pacific Grove. On July 4th, 1990, the city of Pacific Grove adopted an ordinance proclaiming July 4th as National Dog Day.
