The population of Pacific Grove as of the 2010 census was 7,511. It is one of the oldest towns in California and has been a center for wine production since before European settlement. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln declared it an agricultural research station to promote American wine production. The town grew rapidly after World War II due to its location near San Francisco and its access to Interstate Highway 95. However, they have experienced declining popularity over recent years because of high Cost of living and increased competition from other nearby towns. Today, Pacific Grove remains a small community with close ties to its people and history. Pacific Grove's name comes from two places in Alta California: "Puerto de la Paloma" which means "Landing at the Point" and "Guerero" which means "House on the Hill". At first there were only36 settlers who arrived here on December 15th 1853 by ship from Mexico City under the command of Captain José Castro Pérez with his family including his wife Micaela Castro (born October 6th 1797). They named their new land Rancho Santa Clara de los Andes because they had come up against obstacles from Mission Santa Clara de Asís on Monterey Peninsula obstructing their way northward after reaching California through what is now known as Silicon Valley. From this rancho Santa Clara de los Andes began granting land grants that would eventually become Pacific Grove CDP when Spanish explorer Juan Bautista Cabrillo visited in 1602 while exploring North America for Spanish ships looking for a passage home to Spain via India or Cathay Strait

It is located on the Pacific Grove Peninsula and east of San Francisco. It is bordered by Palo Alto to the south, Menlo Park to the north, Stanford University to the east and west, and its own unincorporated community of Easton. The name "Pacific Grove" comes from an 1847 land grant by Commodore John C. Fremont to Adolphus Daly and his brother George Washington Dixon after they surveyed Rancho de las Pulgas near present day Pacific Grove. The first post office at Pacific Grove was established in 1851, but it did not open until 1862 due to competition from San Francisco's new post office which opened on December 12th of that year. The first town meeting held at Pacific Grove took place on April 26th of 1863 with Jepson as mayor and Haggerty as recorder. On July 1st 1861 a fire destroyed most of the buildings in town including the courthouse which reopened in 1865 under new management with John Wiegand as manager. In 1868 a railway line was proposed connecting San Francisco with Alameda via Livermore Valley but no action was taken until 1870 when Congress passed an act providing for a transcontinental railroad through central California In 1872 Captain Charles Wilkes disembarked at Angel Island Naval Station just offshore from now known as Pier 39 for what would become known as America's First Harbor Cruise; his shipyard became one of North American’s leading shipyards responsible for building vessels such as USS Constitution (1865), USS Maine (1871), USS Olympia (1875) and numerous others during this period After America's Civil War ended there were no more military commissions or Requirements for Federal lands so individual farmers began selling their holdings outside of Gold Rush towns like Oakland & Sacramento where prices had been high enough relative to money earned back home+ Although initial plans called for extending into Northern California these plans stalled out because many entrepreneurs felt they could have made even more money off their properties than they already had doing things like growing crops & mining while also contributing financially towards society
