The history of the National Guard in Pacific Grove, California dates back to 1854 when a detachment of Captain George A. Smith's company from the 3d Battalion, California Volunteers was called to duty at Fort Point Loma on Monterey Peninsula. The battalion served for two years and then was disbanded. In 1856, Captain John Sutter organized a battalion of the 1st Regiment Sacramento Volunteer Infantry and placed it under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James W. Fenton. The regiment cohesion broke down and in March 1857 it was dissolved without battle after three months service. Captain George A. Smith's detachment from the 3d Battalion California Volunteers (now known as The National Guard) arrived in October 1856 and immediately became involved in military activity on Monterey Peninsula. On December 6th, 1856, they were ordered to seize an American fortifications at Pigeon Point on Isla De Mujeres while Company G participated in artillery bombardment; however, no attempt was made to take or hold the fortification which resulted in a loss of life for both sides. On January 5th, 1861, Captain George A Smith's detachment moved upriver to present-day Pacific Grove where they disembarked their horses at Fort Point Loma and took up arms against Californian forces led by General Winfield Scott who had invaded Santa Clara County during the Mexican-American War On January 12th 1861 Captain George A Smith's detachment led by Major Shields attacked San Miguel de Allende near what is now Donner Pass but were repulsed with heavy losses; this action signaled the end of hostilities between Californians and Native Americans near Northern California . A week later on January 17th 1861 captain Smith's detachment again fought an engagement against Californian forces at Rio Bravo southeast of present-day Redwood City; however this time they managed to inflict significant casualties upon their enemies before withdrawing with most men taking refuge insideFort Mathers where they remain until February 2nd when word arrived that Governor Alvarado had surrounded Santa Clara County with 10 miles of rifle shot from San Francisco Bay Commodore John Davenport ordered all available detachments across Sonoma County assembled at Stockton under command of Brigadier General David Hunter who steamed down river accompanied by four ships commanded by Commodore John Davenport himself landing his troops unopposed on February 11th 1861 within sight of Mexico City . Thereafter general Hunter abandoned any hope of crossing into Mexico City before winter closed out any potential openings for either side.; instead he sent his force westward through Guanajuato Province towards Chihuahua City where he awaited news from General Scott about his latest campaign objectives.. After weeks Of intense marching only sporadic skirmishes took place; finally after reaching Chuahua on February 24th General Scott relieved Commodore John Davenport personally leading elements back across country towards Sacramento

Pacific Grove, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It lies east of San Francisco on the Pacific coast. The first Europeans to sight and explore this area were Spanish conquistadors in 1542. The English founded Mission San Buenaventura de Monterey in 1769 and later established mission churches in the area. In 1821, Mexico ceded Alta California to United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The U.S.Army built Fort Point on an artificial peninsula at the mouth of the reachable Sabrina River in 1827-28 as part of military preparations for annexation of Alta California by the United States following Mexican independence from Spain. In 1846, after years of effort by local citizens, Pacific Grove became a town under state jurisdiction with a legal market economy based on agriculture and trade with other parts of California and Oregon during its early years; it had no railroad or telephone service until 1959 when phone service began to be delivered via fiber optics from mainframe plants in Sacramento County (now Silicon Valley). Its growth was due largely to its location: close to major coastal shipping lanes and ports that connected Asia with North America and Europe; excellent access to public transportation including both bus lines and private cars; easy access to beaches along Highway 1A which runs through town; agricultural production such as fruits, vegetables, nuts (pecans), cattle, lumber, eggs and dairy products; fishing opportunities near Point Reyes National Seashore; rural residential development; tourism
The National Guard has a long and varied history, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The first national guard units were assembled in 1781, during the American Revolution. At that time, there was not yet a unified nation and militias served as local defense forces. The first national guard unit was called the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment of Militia. It patrolled the borders of Pennsylvania looking for Tories and fought in several battles during the war. After the war, many states formed their own militia units, but it was not until 1814 that a national guard regiment was organized under President James K. Polk to help protect American soil from invasion by Mexico. The 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment also participated in this effort. The organization of a national guard regiment became more permanent after the Civil War when Congress passed acts authorizing each state to form its own militia battalion with federal troops if necessary to prevent insurrection or insurrection within its borders (Ulysses S Grant Presidential Papers: IX: 379). National Guard units have played an important role throughout most of America’s history, including World War II when they mobilized for service in both European and Pacific theaters; Operation Desert Storm; Hurricane Katrina; and many other natural disasters since 1933 (Ulysses S Grant Presidential Papers: IX: 379-380). In addition, military exercises have been conducted at various locations around the country involving both active duty and reserve members of the National Guard (Ulysses S Grant Presidential Papers: XI). These exercises help improve communication between uniformed servicemen and civilians on various issues such as search-and-rescue operations during earthquakes or hurricanes; traffic control during large events like Super Bowl celebrations or Mardi Gras parades; or counterdrug patrols in areas where crime is high (Jenna Seidel kitchens).
