Pacific Grove is a small town located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pacific Grove were fur traders and missionaries who called it "Newfound Land." The first residents were Japanese people who came to work on a large ranch run by Capt. Kameyama Yukichi in 1853. In 1865, Commodore Perry's forces invaded Japan and burned down most of Tokyo including Hiroshima and Nagasaki while the Samurai defended their city gates - a event still commemorated annually by the fireworks display in downtown Hiroshima on September 6th. The burning of Hiroshima also destroyed much of the old city which had been home to some 1,500 Buddhist temples and shrines dating back to before Japan became an open world country. In 1870, two brothers named Hiram Bingham founded Sierra Club with 8 others near Tahoe City, Nevada Territory as a way to protect mountain forests from logging and coal mining operations then under way in that region. Through their many activities over ensuing years they helped preserve more than 36 million acres (16 square miles) of forested land across North America-including Yosemite National Park-and created or protected more than 350 waterfalls, meadows and other natural areas along the way. Pacific Grove was platted on August 29th, 1876 by George Wickersham under patent number 71136 from John Sutter as part of Rancho Rinconada de las Malvinas grantee for 10 leagues wide frontage extending southward thence eastward for 80 rods (20 yds) beyond said grantee's line; thence northwesterly for 60 rods (20 yds) to said saltpeter discovery made by Humboldt Brothers about 1795; thence easterly for 360 degrees (180 degrees true) following said saltpeter discovery until reached its junction with Rinconada Creek; thence southwesterly following said creek to its mouth.- Pacific Grove platting record

Pacific Grove was founded in 1795 by Captain John Mason and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named after the Pacific Ocean which is located to the east of the founders. It became a stop on the California Trail which linked Oregon with California. In 1847, it became a district of San Francisco. In 1853, it became an independent city and in 1850, it amalgamated with San Jose. The city has since grown to be one of the most populous in California with over 1 million residents. The history of Pacific Grove can be traced back to its founding date when Captain John Mason and his wife Rebecca set out from Portsmouth, England on April 20th, 1795 for what would become known as “the great journey across the ocean”. They were accompanied by eleven other passengers who included six children under five years old and Mrs Mason’s sister Martha Mason who acted as their nursemaid. After making landfall at Cape Mendocino on November 7th they continued their journey down the coast until they reached Monterey Bay on January 5th of 1796 where they stopped for dinner before continuing their journey southward through difficult terrain that required weeks of effort just to march 10 miles per day! After arriving in Monterey Bay Captain John Mason proceeded northward alongshore where he built a temporary shelter from winter while he awaited news from Father Diego Rivera about possible land grants that could be made available for him and his party should they find success exploring inland uncharted territory beyond Monterey Bay. On February 24th1796 Lieutenant James Ingraham sailed into Monterey Harbor aboard HMS Discovery commanded by Commodore George Vancouver) after sighting land off shore that had been reported by Spanish fishermen days earlier! This event marked an important turning point in American naval history as Vancouver finally verified reports of America’s new continent! After landing his squadron ashore at Point Reyes Station (present-day Marin County), he began survey work on Santa Cruz Island but soon realized that there were more potential areas for development within present-day Pacific Grove than what had been seen previously! He therefore ordered his men to return home because further exploration was not contemplated given this new information! Captain John Mason returned home safely but four other passengers including two small children died during their trip; one due to fever contracted while camped near Point Reyes Station and another drowned during a storm off shore when their ship overturned!. Upon learning of these tragedies Captain John Mason immediately returned home with all his remaining equipment including stores and provisions so that he could continue explorations elsewhere should he discover any new land or water sources! In 1847 Captain John Mason applied for membership in The United States Academy Of Sciences which was later granted to him! He served as its President from 1851-1855 inclusive!
