Pacific Grove is a town in Santa Cruz County, California, United States. The population was 5,453 at the 2010 census. Pacific Grove is located on the San Francisco Bay and is part of the Silicon Valley metropolitan area. Pacific Grove is one of the oldest towns in California and has been around since 1795. The first Europeans to explore what is now Santa Cruz County were part of Captain Bligh's British crew who journeyed through this area in 1807-1808. A small Coast Miwok village was discovered by Juan Bautista de Anza on his way from Mexico City to Monterey in 1814 while exploring this region along with Spanish missionaries. The first European settlement at Pacific Grove was founded by Jesuits under the name Rancho Concepcion de la Bahia (Rancho Conception Bay) on December 2, 1795 as part of Mission San José del Buen Ayre. Jesuit priests built a mission chapel and began to farm land within it for their own use and for worship of God at Mission San José de Loreto which was about four miles away. In 1846 when Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna led an invasion of California, his forces burned down most of Mission San Josédel Buen Ayre including all its buildings but sparing the chapel which they repaired and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe instead on January 15, 1847 as part of public humiliation before invading Californias new statehood ceremony held at Monterey Peninsula capital Yerba Buena Island across from modern-day Palo Alto This event helped give birth to American culture where people generally celebrate independence day (January 3rd) as a national holiday and continue celebrating Mexican Fiesta days such as Day Of The Dead throughout most or all parts of North America even though these celebrations may have originated with Mexicans living hereabouts long before those events took place! On October 1st 1800 Father Junípero Serra arrived in Monterey from Manila with 10 ships carrying supplies for St Ignatius Loyola's Philippines missionsfield hospital which he had started construction near Isla Mexicana just off shore from today's pier at Moss Landing Harbor also known today as Point Reyes National Seashore - having sailed up BIras Creek -only two miles eastward from our present downtown core! Father Serra soon established several other Missions including one called Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Our Lady Of The Rocks) near Point Reyes Naval Air Station - about three miles due north northwest from our current downtown core - serving primarily ferrying passengers between Point Reyes Naval Air Station and nearby Alcatraz Island where military personnel quarters were located during World War II! A severe storm hit Northern California coastal areas early September 1906 causing extensive damage both ashore both inland via mudslides caused by heavy rains that week followed by fires that raged for many days destroying thousands acres especially inside Mission Dolores park now home to over 100 years old trees & bushes!! One can only imagine what would have occurred if Father Serra had not arrived specifically to help put out that particular fire!!! What a tragic reminder that sometimes good things do happen after bad things happen! In any case Father Serra continued coming each year until his death in 1909 leaving behind an entire church infrastructure erection program plus detailed plans & drawings detailing everything from topTo bottomXavier Manuel Martinez y Pacheco being named his successor!!!! Many thanks go out especially to Frisco resident Donny Yeoman who generously shared some very interesting personal recollections related to Father Javier’s life & work with me during our recent interviewee visit recently at Point Reyes Marina adjacent directly next door to Guerneva Park Zone National Monument right alongside beautiful stark sand beaches backed by imposing rocky cliffs popular among nudists !! During my visit I also met quite a few local residents thereabouts (& others we ran into scattered throughout town), shoppers variously picking up items browsing Main Street boutiques stocking much local produce etc., * young kids playingfully running back & forth between stores shouting “Mamá don’t worry, papá doesn’t know yet”; people chatters incessantly inside various businesses etc.; dog walkers taking turns leading their dogs outside for a good stretch; attractive young women sunbathing surmounted by large white parasols lazily strolling along beachfront sidewalks; venerable old men loungingsmoking cigars lazily watching Kipling stories being read out loud while sipping chivas bravas ();* lotsa live music going on every night either indoors or outdoors courtesyof numerous open air bars/pubs spread throughout town center... pretty typical SoCal summertime scene wouldn't you say?!)?!? Coastal foggy conditions prevailed intermittently starting late morning TuesdaySept 9th thru early afternoon Thursday Sept 11th creating hazardous maritime weather conditions necessary for boating operations offshore particularly near Pt Destroyer Light VesselGrigantona transiting close inshore..USNS Grigantona moored approximately 12NM NE Grigantona Portage Strait boats could be seen making port calls occasionally underway occasionally passing between Pt Destroyer Light Vessel Grigantona&USS Riddle Reef light vessel shortly prior then returning upstream during low tide then continuing their voyage nearer shore later evening... SMACKHEADS??????? well needless to say no fishing allowed!!!!! Needless said more about this topic below….. The name "Pacific Grove" is from the Coast Miwok word "pago" meaning "place where fish are caught." The first Europeans to visit and map the area were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on July 10, 1492, while exploring route Sebastian Vizcaíno took in October 1542. The area now known as Pacific Grove was part of Rancho San Pablo until 1848 when it became part of the United States. In 1853, President Franklin Pierce designated part of what is now Pacific Grove as a national forest. The town started off as a small agricultural center with stores, churches and schools. By 1870, there were also several hotels and resorts nearby. The town grew quickly due to its location and accessibility to water resources like reservoirs and canals. Roads were built to connect Pacific Grove with other towns in the valley and outside of San Francisco. By 1910, there were over 100 businesses in Pacific Grove including banks, factories and warehouses. Many people from around the Bay Area came to work in these businesses during this time period such as Stanford University students who worked at local companies or farmers who bought land near the town for farming purposes
