The United States Military has been present in Pacifica, California for well over two hundred years. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sighted land near what is now Pacifica on November 8, 1542. In 1846, American soldiers led by General Phillip Sheridan burned down the old mission at Point Lobos in order to expand U.S. colonization of California. The area became part of the Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant and was used as an agricultural reserve until it was bought by the Central Pacific Railroad in 1881. In 1917, during World War I, the US Cavalry Regiment 17th Cavalry Battalion (later 2nd Battalion) Stationed here furnished detachments and replacements for units being mobilized throughout the Western Theater of War. These troops fought at Anzio beachhead and later at Poitiers where they were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for their heroism. By 1901 when Telephone Service arrived through Northern Telecom Company wires outlying Rancho Tamalpais area it quickly became apparent that much larger towns such as San Jose were not going to be able to support their growing populations without developing big infrastructure needs including airports and Communities Development Centers (CDC). So instead on November 2nd 1901 Southern California Edison Pte Ltd., predecessor of current UC Berkeley Electric Light District completed construction at what is now Candlestick Park – home field for today’s San Francisco Giants professional baseball team – without ever seeing play there! This event established Candlestick Park as both a world-famous ballpark played host by some major league teams from beginning in 1903 until it closed its doors in 1966 after many years hosting non-professional baseball only catastrophes such as The Great American Bash which took place behind home plate only days before game day! Although Candlestick Park would not be used again until 1984 when new Candlestick Park West opened adjacent to North Shore Coliseum then went bankrupt within 5 years prior making it yet another early modern sports stadium failures like most others during this era! The station's concessionaire was the firm of Kress Bros., which also ran WPFW (1090 AM) from 1921-1927. In 1927, Kress Bros. merged with Westinghouse Broadcasting Company and became part of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). NBC would later purchase KPFA outright in 1945 from Kress Bros., making it part of its San Francisco affiliate network. The first post office in Pacifica was established on July 10, 1892. The town of Pacifica was founded in 1908 by the landowner and developer Harry W. Mills. The name "Pacifica" is derived from the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton located adjacent to the town. In 1916, the Haseltine Lumber Company constructed a sawmill and millrace within a few miles of Pacifica. In 1928,Pacifica had its own electric company and became part of Southern California Edison's system. In 1936, when the United States entered World War II, Pacifica became an airbase for fighter planes used by Navy pilots training at nearby Miramar Air Station. On December 2, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor with naval ships and bombers; this attack led to America's entry into World War II as an ally of Japan. On December 8th 1942, Japan bombed Los Angeles; this attack led to American military forces bombing Japanese targets throughout Northern California starting on December 9th 1942. This campaign ended on February 28th 1945 when Emperor Hirohito abdicated his rule following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which caused over 60% of all civilian casualties in Asia during World War II
