Pacifica, California is a census-designated place located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 156 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from a World War II military airfield nearby. Pacifica is also home to Camp Pendleton and other military bases. The original land that became Pacifica was part of Rancho de las Palmas, which was purchased by George Hearn in 1834. Pacifica is located in western Los Angeles County on the eastern edge of Sherman Oaks, adjacent to Burbank and Glendale. It begins at Oxnard Street and runs eastward for about 3 miles before turning south and descending into the valley below via routes 95 and 210 (the Ventura Freeway). The community developed primarily around Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, which occupies most of its eastern border. Other major regional centers include Boyle Heights and Norwalk. According to the United States Census Bureau, Pacifica has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 154 people, 50 households, and 36 families residing in the CDP. Pacifica, California is a small town in the eastern Mojave Desert of Northern California. It has a population of about 7,500 people. The name "Pacifica" comes from the Spanish phrase "Pasco de Oro" which means "Gold Coast". Pacifica was founded in 1907 by pioneers including John Pemberton and others who were looking for land to establish a new colony in what is now Nevada. The town was first named Pershing when it was platted in 1909 by Hiram Bingham and others as part of his effort to purchase Rancho Las Bolsas from Juan Bautista Alvarado. The first post office opened at Pacifica on November 10, 1911. In 1915, the town became an incorporated city with mayor Wm. J. Hassett as its first leader. By 1930, the population had grown to over 20,000 people and the city annexed parts of nearby Yucca Valley. In 1950, Pacifica voted to become an open-air nuclear testing site during World War II because it had been designated as such by the United States Atomic Energy Commission (USAE). In 1957, when Interstate 5 bypassed Pacifica entirely and instead built through downtown Los Angeles County, storeowners began protesting against this development by setting up shop signs that read "I5 not my home". A group of local residents formed the Save Our City Committee to fight back and succeeded in blocking I5 construction until 1978 when they were forced out by police using tear gas after refusing to leave their stores unguarded
