The history of Pacifica, California dates back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Mexican land grant Rancho San Antonio. In 1836, Spanish colonists founded Mission San Francisco de Asís in what is now downtown Pacifica. In 1851, American settlers arrived in response to the gold rush and founded the town of Bidwell onshore from Point Reyes Station. Pacifica grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location on Highway 1 between San Francisco and Sacramento - both major transportation hubs then - and its status as an agricultural center. In 1903, it incorporated as a city under the name of “Pacifica” after becoming an International City under Treaty No. 9054 granted by Congress in 1903 pursuant to Article XIII (§1) of the Constitution of California In 1955, following passage of Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriage statewide, Pacifica elected Mayor Robert Wagner who led the community through one of the most difficult moments in its history – public protest culminated with a peaceful civil disobedience campaign that ultimately forced his resignation two months later Since then, Mayor Wagner has worked tirelessly to support city services while also promoting diversity and equity within our community .
