The National Guard of Pacifica, California was organized on December 8, 1941. The first unit to be activated was the 101st Airborne Division which arrived at Camp Pendleton in Southern California on December 11th. From that point forward all PACIFICA units were under the command of the Army’s Ninth Corps commanded by General Douglas MacArthur. In January 1942 the Second Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment was activated and assigned to Company C of the 101st Airborne Division. The battalion served primarily in North Africa and Europe until May 1943 when they were reassigned to Japan as part of the occupation forces. A detachment from this battalion also served as security for President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his visit to Japan in November 1943. On July 15, 1945 a detachment from Company G, 117th Infantry Regiment was reactivated at Camp Pendleton and assigned to Company B of the National Guard Bureau’s Twenty-Third Infantry Division stationed at Guam where it served until September 1945 when it returned home and rejoined Company G of the National Guardsmen of Pacifica disbanded on October 1st 1946.

Wodehouse lived in nearby Lancaster at the time and he donated land for what would become Pacifcay National Monument in 1955. Today, Pacifcay is one of 10 national monuments administered by Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). In 1969, HABs designated part of pacificaya as an International Biosphere Reserve with world-renowned plants like Eucalyptus globulus and Acacia spp., among others.
