Pacifica is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north coast of San Francisco Bay. The name "Pacifica" comes from the Spanish word "página" meaning "pages", because it was first given to the community by Rancho Pacifico, a Mexican land grant. The grant extended for about 2 miles (3 km). In 1847, John Sutter and his brother-in-law Peter Costantini founded what became known as Sutter's Fort on Point Reyes Peninsula near today's Sausalito. In 1849 they sold Fort Point to American millionaire Edward Houghton who renamed it Houghton Point Harbor after himself and his friend Commodore George Bassett Howe of HMS FortunateUSN captain in command of HMS Sandwich during the Crimean War. Houghton developed a small Navy dockyard there which produced warships for both world wars including USS Constitution and USS Tacoma; he also built a summer home onshore which remains standing today as one of Pacifica's most popular attractions--the Houghton House.* On October 15, 1862 Captain James Bogue USN lost his life while commanding USS Argonaut off Samoa when his boat struck rocks offshore resulting in an loss of life not uncommon at that time due to lack of safety regulations then compared to modern standards. His death eliminated any chance of Ulysses S Grant becoming President unopposed at the time due to electoral votes then being needed for office eligibility The town boundaries were changed in 1923 when much of Marin County was acquired by the State of California and became part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area; however Pacifica retains its own government within that jurisdiction as well as its own schools and police force.
