The city of Palm Desert, California was founded on November 3, 1887 by James Sinclair and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the palm tree that Sinclair had seennearby. The first post office in Palm Desert opened on December 1, 1888. By 1893, the population of Palm Desert had grown to over 100 people. On October 6, 1896, the first issue of The Daily Journal was published in Palm Desert. On January 2, 1899, President William McKinley delivered a speech at an event organized by the Chamber of Commerce in which he denounced lynching as a moral evil and called for its abolition. This speech helped spur action in Palm Desert to address lynching and other violence against black Americans. In 1907-1908, Gordon Biersch Brewing Company operated a brewery in Palm Desert with acapacity of 30 bottles per day. In 1912-1913 it became known as Empire Brewery because it produced beer for export to Europe and North America. In 1916-1917 it became Anheuser Busch Brewery after merging with two other breweries: Adolphus Busch (the beer company) and Carlsberg (a Danish brewer). In 1927 AnheuserBusch announced that it would close all its breweries except one – Pabst Brewing Company – because Prohibition had made alcoholic beverages almost impossible to produce outside of the United States without breaking federal law. Pabst Breweries reopened in 1928 under new management but closed again in 1933 due to prohibitionism being repealed nationwide that year
