Palm Desert, California is a city located in the Mojave desert of Southern California. It is bounded by the states of Nevada to the east and Arizona to the west. The population was 97,433 at the 2010 census. The name "Palm Desert" was given to it by General John Pershing in 1919 when he served as Commandant of military forces in this area during World War I. The city began as a small settlement on February 17, 1914, when Waddell S. Wellman and his family set up a trading post near present-day Palm Springs on Inyo County's southeastern border with San Bernardino County. By 1915, Palm Desert had grown into a small town with an estimated population of 50 people. On November 3, 1920, Palm Desert became part of Imperial Valley National Forest and was renamed Thermal Beach after its first mayor, Phillip J. Wegehafer. At that time there were only 10 residents in Palm Desert and only two businesses - the Consolidated Aircraft Company hangar and Wellman's Trading Post - both open for business. However, within two years those businesses had closed due to the depression which struck America at that time. In 1933, following passage of legislation protecting American forests from deforestation due to oil production methods then being developed in other parts of America (the Asiatic Pulp & Paper Corporation v US), Thermal Beach became one of six national forest townships within USDA's National Forest System outright administrated by Regional Planning Service staff members who inspected all township plans submitted for approval (as part of their program designed to improve forest management). After more than 15 years administering township services through various male ranger officers appointed annually from among responsible town-speople determined not necessary or desirable because no new development or growth had taken place since Township Administration was discontinued back in 1933; Tanner resigned effective October 1st 1978 having been appointed Director Emeritus effective January 1st 1979 succeeding Archibald Tanner who retired June 30th 1976 On July 5th 1957 President Dwight Eisenhower designated special areas along United States-Mexican Border including portions now comprising Riverside County (including what are now palm deserts) as Area 154 under jurisdiction of UPNP Directorate headquartered at Brownsville Army Airfield south side mission station bearing reference number 8059 december 20th 1954 thru may 6th 1958 under general directive NN9771 created pursuant thereto iguana ranchera National Monument Preserve

palm desert was originally named after the palo verde tree which grows in the area. In 1853, Charles Goodyear and his son, Emory Goodyear, found a new mine in the area and named it "Palm Desert". The goodyear family ran the mine for many years until it closed in 1915. The name palm desert came about because of John D. Rockefeller's purchase of a piece of land from Alisal Palm Oil Company in 1916. Rockefeller wanted to rename his new company "Rockefeller Palms" but Transportation Secretary Harold Ickes vetoed the idea because he thought that an Americanized version of "Alisal" would be less undesirable than another British company's name. In 1923, California Governor William Lyon Mackenzie King acquired part of Rancho Mirage from Alisal Palm Oil Company and announced that he was going to develop it into a resort town called palms SPRINGFIELD (later changed to PALM DESERT). He donated 1,500 acres of what is now Palm Desert to the state for this purpose and began developing it into what is today known as Palm Desert. In 1933, California State Treasurer Edward Muhlenberg purchased all remaining water rights from Alisal Palm Oil Company so that development could not continue at that site. The city of Palm Desert was founded on December 14th 1934 by George Haggerty with assistance from entrepreneur Edwin Ladd Sr.. Haggerty believed that if he could get people to live there permanently then they would be more likely to stay put when things got tough elsewhere. The first Mayor was Ralph Sargent who served from 1935-1938; followed by Averell Harriman who served from 1938-1941 and Franklin D Roosevelt who served from 1941-1945. After World War II ended there were no more taxes or services available in Palm Desert so business slowly died down which led to high population density which caused environmental problems such as air pollution and water shortages
