The Palm Desert National Guard was organized on Feb. 14, 1911. The first unit to be activated was the 141st Field Artillery Regiment. The Palm Desert National Guard has served in numerous conflicts, starting with World War I and continuing through the Cold War and Gulf War. Today, the Palm Desert National Guard provides support to both local law enforcement and county emergency response efforts. It also offers a unique opportunity for citizens to show their patriotism by volunteering their time as guardsmen or reservists. In addition, the National Guard is active in several patriotic programs such as Honor Flight and Veterans Dayparades.

The Palm Desert National Guard was activated on December 12th, 1947. The unit was originally stationed at the nearby Comstock Air Force Base. In 1951, they moved to Twentynine Palms and were headquartered at the Air Force Station there until 1954. From 1955-1957 they were stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. On July 1st, 1957, the Palm Desert National Guard detachment located in Riverside County transferred to the newly formed Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The Palm Desert area was first settled by the Tongva people in the latexteenth century. The first Europeans to visit the area were Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his party of Spanish explorers in 1542. In 1797, Baron de Rothschild bought land in what is now Palm Desert from the Tongva people. The baron built a small rancho here and named it after himself, Baron von Rothschild. The area became part of California during the Mexican-American War when President Maximilian Juárez leased it from Mexico for sixty years. After California gained statehood in 1850, a group of Kleberg brothers purchased some of von Rothschild's land and founded what is now Sun Valley Colony on it in 1875. The colony was abandoned in 1940 but has been restored as a tourist destination since then.
