In 1925 the city limits were expanded to include all of Arroyo Grande County including portions of Garmon Heights and Sun City that had been annexed into Palm Springs since 1911. The first post office for Palm Springs opened on December 12th, 1912. The name "Palm Spring" was chosen because it sounded like "sparrow's nest." The first use of the present location for Palm Springs was on October 16th 1899 when Elisha Hetch Hetchy established his geological observation tower at what is now known as Mt Zion Park after discovering oil there during an exploration trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles through Owens Valley
