There are many different types of coffee beans and roasts available in the city, but today’s gourmet coffee industry is made up largely of Ethiopian, Guatemalan, and Colombian coffees. These three countries account for a significant percentage of all roasted beans sold in the United States. The first espresso machines were invented in Italy in 1887 by Luigi Bezzera and Angelo Fratti. Coffee was first brewed with water and then later with milk using an animal’s stomach as a brewer. The first automatic espresso machine was developed by Giovanni Anselmo Bellini at Polisario International Trading Company in 1924. This machine used a lever system to make espresso drinks automatically from a series of small capsules filled with ground coffee beans. In 1925, Bezzera patented his own mechanical espresso maker which he called the “Bezzeria Modelo Cappuccino” (Bellini model number 5). It featured a chrome plated metal pot with a conical iron grinder that crushed the Beans into very fine pieces before they were served to users through an electronic tube leading to the cupola where they were placed under pressure and heated until just right before being poured overhot water was forced into it to produce an exquisite flavor extraction experience known as “milfoire” or “crema pannaato” (coffee cream). This technology allowed for large quantities of high quality coffee to be produced quickly without having to go through great lengths for grinding or extracting every particle of flavor from each bean. Thanks also to this machine's design, it became possible for people living near Italian ports like Naples and Rome to purchase fresh roasted beans directly from these cities without having their purchases delivered directly to their homes! By 1937, Automatic Coffee Service had become one of the largest commercial operators within town limits when it opened its doors on El Camino Real Boulevard adjacent to what is now Don Julio Mexican Restaurant & Cantina . From there Automatic began delivering 45-pound sacks of whole Bean Columbian Supremes direct door-to-door throughout Southern California including Palm Springs! And while we may not have had whole Bean Supremes on our doorstep back then (that would have been pretty amazing…) we did manage some delicious Via Belvedere Arabica blends during that time period courtesy of our friends at Automatic Coffee Service!
