Hill leased land east of present day downtown from Jesse Lummis for $1 per acre (at that time a very high price). The town was founded on July 4th, 1912 by developer John Prentice who purchased 640 acres from Lummis for $10 per acre. Over time, palm trees were planted all around the town so that people could enjoy fresh air without having to go outside to do so. The first post office was established in 1914 and the first telephone line arrived in 1916. In 1922, The Desert Sun newspaper was founded here and continues to be published today. One of my favorite things about living here is seeing all the different types of architecture which range from Tudor Revival style homes to modernist buildings!
