The history of maga coffee can be traced back to the early 1900s when two Swiss brothers, Hans and Rudolf Engelbrecht, opened a small cafe in Palm Springs. This cafe was known for its quality espresso beans and for serving up traditional Swiss cuisine. In 1932, the Engelbrechts sold their business to Italian immigrants who renamed it La Scala Coffee House. The new owners changed the name to La Jolla Coffee House in 1950. In 1957, Harry Vail purchased La Jolla Coffee House and made changes to the décor and menu. He introduced java as an espresso drink and began promoting maga coffee as a unique Arabica bean-based beverage that could only be found at La Jolla CoffeeHouse. In addition to providing good maga coffee, Vail also served up innovative items such as tiramisu sandwiches and paninis. In 1992, Harry Vail passed away at age 87 and his son John took over management of La Jolla CoffeeHouse. John continued to make changes to the restaurant including adding an on-site bakery which became one of the most popular features of the house. La Jolla CoffeeHouse was closed in 2001 after being plagued by financial problems. However, due to efforts by volunteers associated with Save Our Cafe (SOC), La Jolla Cafe reopened in 2007 under new ownership with improved security measures and a more diverse menu that includes typical American café fare along with Turkish tea experiences from around Asia Minor. SOC has since helped preserve much of what made La Jllo famous including its iconic facade adorned with mint leaves; its wide open air dining room complete with garden views; its large inventory of classic European coffees; as well as some rarer beans such as Ethiopian gourmet sinbad coffee from Doha Bayou). Among other things SOC has preserved are many original 1930s library books about palm springs coffee culture which have been placed on display inside la Scala Café alongside various photos, articles about LAJOLA's history etc.; numerous period art pieces depicting life at la Scala during prohibition days; vintage photo albums documenting daily life at la Scala during Prohibition days; old movie projector systems used for screening old movies including "Cimarron" (1937) & "Gone With The Wind" (1939); plus a wide variety of collectibles sourced from local collector societies etc., all OFFLINE!

The city of Palm Springs, California was founded on November 3, 1912 by theAutomobiles Company. The company had a desire to create an escape from the hassle and bustle of cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. In addition to creating a location for their company that could be secluded and relax, Automobiles also wanted to make sure that their new town would have a certain flair. This style came about due to the fact that at the time there were only two other towns in Southern California with this look: Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. In order to achieve this look, Automobiles hired local architects who helped develop what is now known as Palm Springs’ “Jazz Age Look”. One of these architects was Harry Weazley who designed many of the town’s buildings including the Desert Inn which still stands today and serves as a popular tourist destination today. Additionally, Weazley also designed several important landmarks such as City Hall which is located on Utopia Parkway and still remains in use today. The Look became so popular that it continued into the 1970s when Automobiles merged with Chrysler Corporation. As part of this merger, Automobiles began producing Tahoes but also decided not to keep any specific design or concept associated with their previous cars such as Jazz Age designs or round headlamps. Instead they simply changed the name of their factory to Chrysler-Chrysler Pacifica Division (now known as Jeep). This move allowed them more leeway in what they produced however they did continue produce some unique styles such as The Grand Wagoneer which is still sold today and features a long hooded car bodystyle along with an open grille
The Palm Springs Civic Center, previously the Town Hall and Post Office, was completed in 1912. It served as a meeting place for the town's first board of supervisors and as a stop on stagecoaches from Los Angeles to Palm Springs. The building also housed the town library from 1913 until 1951. In 1924, the civic center was renamed in honor of President Warren G Harding.
