The Palm Springs National Guard Museum is a small, but significant museum in the city of Palm Springs, California. It houses artifacts and photos from the history of the Palm Springs National Guard. The museum was founded in 1954 by Colonel Harry S. Truman as a way to keeparchive of military equipment used by the guard and to educate people about their role in American society during World War II and subsequent years. The first items on display at the museum were clothing, tools, helmets and other equipment belonging to the local county sheriff's department. In 1957, national guard troops arrived in town for Operation Gold Rush which brought many workers and settlers to town. Soon after, clothes, accessories and vehicles belonging to various organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, American Legionnaires Auxiliary or Southern California Women's Auxiliary were added to the collection. In 1963-1964 Sgt. First Class Donny Steele donated an armored personnel carrier (APC) that he had been commissioned into the national guard corps while stationed at Fort Irwin in southern California. The vehicle was part of a collection held by his battalion commander Major General Ralph Lunsford who had served with distinction during World War II as Commanding Officer of United States Army Forces Europe (USAFEF). The APC arrived at the Palms Springs Museum on July 15th 1964 when it was displayed for one week before being sent back home for storage until it could be restored and placed back into service with USAFEF under Captains John Flandersy and Chester King IV according to testimony given at an inquiry into military procurement practices conducted by Congressman Bob Filner on October 9th 1995 In 1970-1971 two more armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) were donated from Fort Irwin; these were painted green with white lettering reading "National Guard" above each door canopy which served as exhibit exhibits at different museums across North America before being shipped back home where they now reside with ThePalmsSpringsMuseum team
