At this time, Tactical Coffee began being sold at local stores across Southern California. About 1850-1860, John Sutter also started manufacturing an espresso machine called the "Sutler Machine." This machine could make up to sixty cups of espresso per hour. It was used by Starbucks employees and other café owners to make tactical coffee for their customers who wanted a strong cup of espresso with a little kick. The Sutler Machine was eventually replaced by an automated espresso machine that Starbucks purchased from Italian manufacturer De Simone in 1978. By 1870-1872, Spanish explorer Don Antonio Pena had journeyed through central California searching for goldfields when he discovered two small villages located on either side of what is now Interstate 805 near downtown Los Angeles County – Placentia and Santa Ana – both possessed small cafes serving articles such as pastries and small beers called "tecateques" (or "tactical teas"). Aspen & Company became aware of these settlements and decided to open one its own tacocafés at its Los Angeles branch near Hollywood's First National Bank building on Robson Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue starting October 1st 1870 under the name “Atascadero” or “Spanish Place”; later changed to simply “Penasco” after Pena's death [3] . Soon thereafter another tacocafe opened at Chavez Ravine&Company's old Woolworth store on Fairfax Avenue between Fifth Street eastward towards Sunset Boulevard where many people gathered before going into town for shopping or entertainment purposes; it too became known as “Atascadero” or simply “Penasco” after Pena's death [4]. With Atascadero/Pena's establishment came increased interest among Californians throughout Orange County adjacent theretoin raiding parties engaged therein seeking rich veins o' silver & gold;plenty enough knew about Captain Nemo & Co.'s 'beloved Islas Malvinas' lay off due southwest corner aforesaid - henceforth various sprightly signifying devices were affixed above door handle housings thereof - bells jingling constantly attracting attention whenever entering or leaving particularly favoured precincts...the place soon acquired a character peculiarly its own - that of fashionable resort for high society ladies visiting friends within easy reach along pleasant streetside drive... likewise numerous military families resided thereabouts enjoying all the advantages provided by good country roads leading theretofrom outlying points adjoining tho city limits thereby making it not only quiet but also quite secluded within itself... hereinafter appeared more conspicuously definite signs marking off 'The Terrace'. The foregoing briefly describes some of the features associated with panoptic tacocafé times long past: (1) choice ol beverages served including tea etc.; (2) inviting proprietors (& visitors) inside thru glass fronted portals surrounded by bright plants life-like modeling human faces behind solid woodcarving viz windows facing street level; (3) live music occasionally playing thru speakers outdoors courtesy owner/manager(s); (4) attempt at providing socializing atmosphere even when business isn't doing well :-)
