The history of Palmdale begins with Spanish traders who came to the area in 1849. In 1862, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at present-day Palmdale after he discovered gold near Van Nuys Creek. The fort served as an important stop on supplies for American forces fighting in the Mexican-American War and later became a center for citrus production. In 1912, Mayor James J. Hill proposed moving the county seat from Van Nuys to Palmdale because he felt that it would be more economically feasible to do so than to keep both towns together. The proposal was accepted by voters and moved the county seat to Palmdale on November 3, 1912. Since its move to its current location, Palmdale has experienced several waves of growth throughout its history; however, it has not had as large or sustained an impact as some other nearby metropolitan areas such as Hollywood or Riverside.[1] This may be partially due to its relative size - only about 10% of Palmdale's total population lives within 1 mile (2 km) of any major intersection or business district.[2] Additionally, many people who live within 1 mile (2 km) are engaged in agriculture instead of professional services or commerce.[3] Despite these limitations, however, Palmdales residents have made significant contributions to their community by creating businesses and organizations such as United Way,[4] art galleries,[5][6][7][8] and libraries.[9]
